Female sex chromosome

Female sex chromosomes are typically two X chromosomes (XX). Chromosomes are structures in our cells that contain DNA, which carries genetic information. In human females, the presence of two X chromosomes determines biological sex. Each parent contributes one sex chromosome; the mother always passes on an X chromosome. This genetic setup influences a variety of traits and characteristics, including those related to reproductive anatomy. In contrast, males generally have one X and one Y chromosome (XY), with the Y chromosome influencing male characteristics. Together, these sex chromosomes play a critical role in human development and reproduction.
