Ethylene production

Ethylene is a key industrial chemical used primarily in the production of plastics, such as polyethylene. It is produced mainly through a process called steam cracking, which breaks down hydrocarbons found in natural gas or crude oil at high temperatures. In the presence of steam, these hydrocarbons are heated until they crack, or split, producing ethylene gas along with other byproducts. Ethylene can also be made through other methods, including catalytic processes. Its importance extends beyond plastics, as it also plays a role in agriculture, ripening fruits, and manufacturing various chemicals.
