Eritrean War of Independence

The Eritrean War of Independence (1961-1991) was a conflict between Eritreans seeking independence from Ethiopian rule and the Ethiopian government. After World War II, Eritrea was federated with Ethiopia but was annexed in 1962, sparking armed resistance. The struggle involved various factions, most notably the Eritrean People's Liberation Front (EPLF). After decades of guerrilla warfare, Eritrean forces gained the upper hand, leading to Ethiopia's defeat in 1991. Eritrea officially became independent in 1993. The war was marked by significant loss of life and displacement, deeply affecting regional politics and shaping Eritrea's national identity.
