It was ruled by an Elector, a high-ranking noble who had the right to vote in the election of the Holy Roman Emperor. Over time, Hesse underwent various territorial changes and political alliances. It played a significant role in German history, particularly during the Napoleonic Wars and the formation of modern Germany in the 19th century.
