DNA Methyltransferases

DNA methyltransferases are enzymes that add a chemical group called a methyl group to DNA. This process, known as methylation, can affect how genes are expressed—essentially turning them on or off. Methylation plays a crucial role in various biological processes, including development, aging, and how our cells respond to the environment. Abnormal DNA methylation patterns are linked to several diseases, including cancer. By studying DNA methyltransferases, scientists hope to better understand these processes and develop potential therapies for diseases associated with dysregulated gene expression.
