DNA methyltransferases are enzymes that add a chemical group called a methyl group to DNA. This process, known as methylation, can affect how genes are expressed—essentially turning them on or off. Methylation plays a crucial role in various biological processes, including development, aging, and how our cells respond to the environment. Abnormal DNA methylation patterns are linked to several diseases, including cancer.
