Dhrupad vocal style
Dhrupad is one of the oldest forms of Hindustani classical vocal music, originating in India. It is characterized by its seriousness and spirituality, often focusing on themes of devotion and nature. The performance usually begins with an elaborate improvisational section called "alaap," followed by rhythmic compositions that can be highly intricate. Singers use sustained notes, deep tonal quality, and rich ornamentation to convey emotion and depth. Dhrupad emphasizes discipline and meditative reflection, appealing to listeners through its profound and introspective nature. It is traditionally accompanied by instruments like the pakhawaj and tanpura.
