Devolution Referendums
Devolution referendums are votes held to decide whether certain powers should be transferred from a central government to regional or local authorities. This process allows regions to have more control over their own affairs, such as education, health care, and transportation. In the UK, for example, referendums in Scotland, Wales, and Northern Ireland in the late 1990s led to the creation of their own devolved parliaments or assemblies. The goal of these referendums is to gauge public support for increasing local governance and to enhance regional autonomy while remaining part of the larger state.
