Cryptococcal Meningitis

Cryptococcal meningitis is a serious infection of the protective membranes covering the brain and spinal cord, caused by the Cryptococcus fungus. Often affecting people with weakened immune systems, such as those with HIV/AIDS, it can lead to symptoms like headache, fever, and neck stiffness. The fungus usually comes from bird droppings and enters the body through inhalation. Diagnosis is typically made through a lumbar puncture (spinal tap) and treated with antifungal medications. If untreated, it can be life-threatening, but with prompt care, many patients can recover.
