Crotaline

Crotaline refers to a subfamily of venomous snakes commonly known as pit vipers. This group includes species like rattlesnakes, copperheads, and cottonmouths. They are characterized by their triangular heads, vertically slit pupils, and heat-sensing pits located between their eyes and nostrils, which help them detect warm-blooded prey. Crotalines primarily inhabit the Americas and are known for their potent venom, used to immobilize their prey. While their bites can be dangerous, these snakes typically avoid confrontation with humans and play an important role in their ecosystems by controlling rodent populations.
