Cottonmouth
Cottonmouth, or water moccasin, is a venomous pit viper snake found in the southeastern United States. It has a robust body, dark coloration, and a distinctive white, cotton-like lining in its mouth, which it displays when threatened. This snake typically inhabits slow-moving waters like swamps, lakes, and marshes. It is generally shy but can be aggressive if cornered or threatened. Cottonmouths rely on their venom to subdue prey such as fish, frogs, and small mammals. Despite their reputation, bites are rarely fatal when promptly treated.
