A Conviction Integrity Unit (CIU) is a specialized team within a prosecutor's office or law enforcement agency that reviews cases where individuals claim they were wrongfully convicted. These units investigate the evidence and circumstances of these cases to ensure justice is served. Their goal is to identify and rectify mistakes in the legal process, such as errors in trial procedures or new evidence that casts doubt on a conviction. By doing so, CIUs help uphold the integrity of the criminal justice system and work to prevent innocent people from serving time for crimes they did not commit.
