Compact of Free Association

The Compact of Free Association (COFA) is an agreement between the United States and certain Pacific Island nations, including the Marshall Islands, Micronesia, and Palau. It allows these nations to have political independence while receiving U.S. financial aid, military protection, and access to certain federal programs. In exchange, the U.S. can establish military bases and has strategic control over the region. This arrangement fosters partnerships and supports the economic and social development of these nations, while ensuring U.S. interests in the Pacific. It is an important aspect of international relations and regional stability.
