Colonial Office
The Colonial Office was a British government department responsible for managing the United Kingdom's colonies and overseas territories. Established in the early 19th century, it oversaw colonial administration, policy-making, and relations with indigenous populations. The office handled issues such as trade, governance, and civil rights within the colonies. As decolonization progressed in the mid-20th century, the Colonial Office's role diminished, leading to its eventual closure in 1966. Today, its functions are largely preserved within the Foreign, Commonwealth & Development Office, reflecting ongoing ties to former colonies.
