Colonial Government of British Columbia
The colonial government of British Columbia was established in the mid-19th century when the area became a British colony. It was created to manage the needs of settlers and control resources, primarily after the gold rushes that attracted many people. The government was led by a governor and a small legislative assembly, reflecting British political systems. Decisions were often influenced by economic interests and colonial policies. Indigenous people were largely excluded from government processes, leading to long-lasting impacts on their rights and lands. British Columbia eventually became a province of Canada in 1871.
