Chilcotin War

The Chilcotin War (1864-1866) was a conflict in British Columbia, Canada, between the Chilcotin people, a First Nations group, and colonial authorities. Triggered by the exploitation of indigenous land and resources, particularly related to the construction of a road and the impacts of disease, tensions escalated into violence. Notably, the war included the infamous killing of a group of surveyors by local chiefs in retaliation for encroachments on their territory. The conflict highlighted issues of land rights and Indigenous sovereignty. It ended with military intervention and resulted in various repercussions for the Chilcotin community and colonial governance.
