Cinqué (Joseph Cinqué)

Joseph Cinqué was a West African man who led a revolt on the slave ship Amistad in 1839. After being captured and enslaved, he and other slaves on board mutinied, seizing control of the ship. They aimed to return to Africa but were ultimately intercepted by a U.S. vessel. The ensuing legal battles highlighted issues of slavery and human rights, drawing national attention. The U.S. Supreme Court eventually ruled in favor of Cinqué and the other captives, allowing them to return to Africa. His story remains a powerful symbol of the struggle for freedom and justice.
