International African Association

The International African Association, founded in 1876, was a non-governmental organization aimed at promoting exploration, trade, and the research of Africa's geography, resources, and cultures. It was largely initiated by European intellectuals and explorers, including King Leopold II of Belgium. The association sought to establish a more accurate understanding of Africa and its peoples, while also advocating for humanitarian efforts. However, it also facilitated colonial ambitions, particularly Leopold's focus on the Congo, leading to exploitation and significant consequences for the region's inhabitants.
