Amistad mutiny
The Amistad mutiny occurred in 1839 aboard a Spanish slave ship called La Amistad. Enslaved Africans, led by Joseph Cinqué, revolted against their captors, seeking freedom as they were being transported to Cuba. They took control of the ship and navigated towards the United States. However, they were captured off the coast of Long Island. The subsequent legal battle highlighted issues of slavery and human rights, eventually reaching the U.S. Supreme Court. In 1841, the Court ruled in favor of the Africans, recognizing their right to fight for freedom, leading to their eventual return to Africa.
