Chinese Nationalist Party
The Chinese Nationalist Party, also known as the Kuomintang (KMT), is a political party in China and Taiwan that historically aimed to unify China under a centralized government and promote nationalism, modernization, and sovereignty. Founded in 1919, it played a leading role in overthrowing the Qing Dynasty and establishing the Republic of China. After losing the Chinese Civil War to the Communists, the KMT retreated to Taiwan in 1949, where it governed for decades and remained a major political force. Today, the KMT advocates for a harmonious relationship with mainland China while maintaining Taiwan’s sovereignty.
