Chilean independence
Chilean independence refers to the process through which Chile became free from Spanish colonial rule, primarily during the early 19th century. The movement began in 1810 with the establishment of a national government and was fueled by growing aspirations for self-governance, inspired by other independence movements in Latin America and the Enlightenment. Key figures included Bernardo O'Higgins and José Miguel Carrera. After a series of battles, including the notable Battle of Maipú in 1818, Chile officially declared independence on February 12, 1818. This marked the beginning of Chile's transition to a sovereign nation, shaping its national identity.
