Bureaucratic Autonomy

Bureaucratic autonomy refers to the degree of independence that government agencies or bureaucracies have in making decisions and implementing policies without direct control from political leaders. This autonomy allows bureaucracies to operate based on expertise, established procedures, and professional judgment, rather than political pressures. While some level of independence can lead to more effective governance and administration, too much autonomy might also lead to a lack of accountability and disconnect from elected officials, creating tension in the relationship between bureaucracies and political authorities.
