Bispectral Index

The Bispectral Index (BIS) is a measure used to assess a person's level of consciousness during anesthesia. It analyzes brain activity through an electroencephalogram (EEG) and provides a numerical score between 0 and 100. A score close to 100 indicates high alertness, while a score closer to 0 suggests deep unconsciousness, as seen during general anesthesia. Anesthesiologists use the BIS to adjust the amount of anesthetic drugs, ensuring patients remain appropriately sedated while minimizing risks and side effects. This helps provide a safer and more effective surgical experience.
