Bispectral Index Algorithm
The Bispectral Index (BIS) Algorithm is a monitoring tool used during anesthesia to assess a patient's level of consciousness. It analyzes brainwave patterns from an EEG (electroencephalogram) to produce a numerical score between 0 and 100, where lower numbers indicate deeper sedation or sleep, and higher numbers suggest wakefulness. The algorithm processes complex electrical signals to help anesthesiologists determine the appropriate depth of anesthesia, ensuring patients are neither under- nor over-sedated, improving safety and optimizing anesthesia care.
