Battle of Maiwand

The Battle of Maiwand took place on July 27, 1880, during the Second Anglo-Afghan War. British forces, led by Brigadier General George Burrows, faced a much larger Afghan army near Maiwand in southern Afghanistan. The battle was marked by poor planning and heavy casualties for the British, who were ultimately overwhelmed. Despite their bravery, around 2,000 British and Indian troops were defeated by about 10,000 Afghan fighters, leading to significant losses and a retreat. This battle highlighted the challenges of British imperial ambitions in Afghanistan and fueled anti-British sentiment in the region.
