Battle of Ethandun

The Battle of Ethandun, fought in 878 AD, was a key conflict during the Viking invasions of England. It pitted the Saxon King Alfred the Great against the Danish Viking leader Guthrum. After suffering earlier defeats, Alfred regrouped and took advantage of terrain to launch a surprise attack. The Saxons emerged victorious, forcing Guthrum to retreat and ultimately sign a peace treaty. This battle was significant as it helped to establish Saxon control over much of England and marked a turning point in the fight against Viking expansion, solidifying Alfred's reputation as a capable leader.
