Barbary Wars

The Barbary Wars were conflicts between the United States and North African pirate states, known as the Barbary States, from the late 18th to early 19th centuries. These pirates attacked American merchant ships, demanding ransom and tribute. In response, the U.S. fought two main wars (1801-1805 and 1815) to stop these attacks and establish free trade. The wars highlighted America's need for a strong navy and marked its emergence as a naval power. Ultimately, the U.S. succeeded in curbing the piracy and asserting its rights on the high seas, showcasing its determination to protect American commerce.
