First Barbary War

The First Barbary War (1801-1805) was a conflict between the United States and North African Barbary States, particularly Tripoli, over piracy and demands for tribute from American ships in the Mediterranean. When Tripoli's leaders demanded money to avoid attacking U.S. vessels, the U.S. refused and sent naval forces to protect its interests. The war ended with a treaty that stopped the piracy and tribute payments temporarily, establishing the U.S. Navy's presence in the region and highlighting American resolve to defend its maritime rights against piracy and extortion.
