Austrian history

Austrian history is marked by its central role in European politics, culture, and conflict. The Habsburgs, a powerful dynasty, ruled much of Europe for centuries, creating a diverse empire. Austria was a major player in the Napoleonic Wars and later the Austro-Prussian War. The Austro-Hungarian Empire (1867-1918) was a significant political entity until its collapse after World War I. The country then experienced a tumultuous interwar period, German annexation in 1938, and Nazi occupation during World War II. Post-war Austria became a neutral republic, known for its cultural contributions and economic stability in modern Europe.
