Art Brut, or "raw art," refers to artwork created by self-taught artists who often work outside the traditional art world, typically without formal training. This form of art is characterized by its raw, instinctive style and emotional intensity, often reflecting personal experiences or the subconscious. The term was popularized by French artist Jean Dubuffet in the mid-20th century, who championed the authentic and unrefined creativity found in marginalized artists, including those in psychiatric hospitals, prisons, or isolated from mainstream culture.
