Anglo-Powhatan Wars
The Anglo-Powhatan Wars were a series of conflicts between English colonists and Native American tribes in Virginia during the early 17th century. The first war (1609-1614) was sparked by tensions over land and resources, leading to violent clashes. It ended with a peace settlement but was unresolved. The second war (1622-1632) began when Powhatan’s successor launched attacks on settlers, resulting in significant casualties. A third, smaller conflict occurred in 1644-1646. Ultimately, these wars weakened Native American resistance and expanded English colonial territory, significantly altering the dynamics of the region and contributing to the decline of the Powhatan Confederacy.
