Opechancanough

Opechancanough was a prominent leader of the Powhatan Confederacy, a group of Native American tribes in what is now Virginia, during the early 17th century. He was the younger brother of Chief Powhatan and played a key role in resisting English colonization and settlement efforts. Opechancanough led several significant uprisings, including a major attack in 1622 that resulted in many colonist deaths. Despite these conflicts, he continued to oppose English expansion until he was captured and killed in 1646. His leadership reflects the Native tribes’ efforts to defend their homeland amid increasing European encroachment.
