Virginia Company

The Virginia Company was a joint-stock company established in 1606 to fund English colonization in North America. Its goal was to create profitable settlements, particularly in Virginia. The company sent settlers, including the founding group that established Jamestown in 1607, the first permanent English settlement. It faced numerous challenges, including conflicts with Indigenous peoples, starvation, and disease. Despite early struggles, the Virginia Company played a crucial role in the expansion of English influence in America, eventually leading to the growth of tobacco as a cash crop and the establishment of successful colonies. The company's charter was revoked in 1624.
