Wilde's trials

Oscar Wilde, a prominent writer and playwright in the late 19th century, faced trials primarily due to his homosexuality, which was criminalized in England at the time. In 1895, Wilde sued Lord Alfred Douglas's father for libel after he accused Wilde of being homosexual. However, the trial exposed Wilde's sexual relationships, leading to his arrest for "gross indecency." In 1895-97, he was convicted and sentenced to two years of hard labor. His trials highlighted societal attitudes towards homosexuality and had lasting impacts on both his life and discussions of sexual ethics in society.
