
Vijayabahu I
Vijayabahu I was a significant king of the Polonnaruwa period in Sri Lanka, ruling from 1055 to 1110 AD. He is best known for re-establishing the Sinhalese monarchy after a period of foreign domination by the Cholas. His reign marked a time of restoration and unity, focusing on rebuilding the kingdom's infrastructure, including irrigation systems, and promoting Sinhala culture. Vijayabahu I also strengthened Buddhism in the region and is remembered for his efforts in defending the country against invaders, thus helping to lay the foundation for the prosperous cultural and political landscape that followed.
