Versailles Treaty
The Versailles Treaty, signed in 1919, officially ended World War I. It imposed heavy reparations and territorial losses on Germany, which many believed led to economic hardship and political instability in the country. The treaty aimed to prevent future conflicts by redrawing national borders and establishing the League of Nations, an international organization meant to promote peace. However, the harsh penalties on Germany fostered resentment and were a contributing factor to the rise of extremist movements, ultimately leading to World War II. The treaty remains a significant event in 20th-century history.
