USS Thresher (SSN-593)
USS Thresher (SSN-593) was a United States Navy nuclear-powered fast-attack submarine, commissioned in 1961. It was the first submarine to be designed with a streamlined hull for higher underwater speeds and advanced safety features. Tragically, during deep-sea testing in 1963, the Thresher sank suddenly, resulting in the loss of all 129 crew members. The disaster led to significant safety overhauls in submarine design and operation, including the development of the Submarine Safety Program. The Thresher's sinking underscored the inherent dangers of deep-sea military operations and prompted advancements in submarine technology and safety protocols.
