Thresher-class submarines

Thresher-class submarines were a series of nuclear-powered attack submarines used by the United States Navy, designed for anti-submarine warfare, intelligence gathering, and fleet support during the Cold War. The first, USS Thresher, was launched in 1960 but tragically sank in 1963 during sea trials. This led to significant safety improvements across the submarine fleet. Thresher-class subs were known for their advanced technology, including quieter engines and sophisticated sonar systems, enhancing their stealth and combat capabilities. They played a crucial role in the U.S. Navy's underwater strategy until they were gradually replaced by newer submarine classes.
