Upper gastrointestinal series

An Upper Gastrointestinal (GI) series is a medical imaging test used to examine the esophagus, stomach, and the first part of the small intestine. During the procedure, you drink a barium solution that helps highlight these areas on X-ray images. This allows the doctor to see any abnormalities, such as ulcers, tumors, or blockages. The test is often performed to investigate symptoms like persistent heartburn, abdominal pain, or swallowing difficulties. It is generally safe, but you may need to avoid food and drink for several hours before the test.
