Ujamaa

Ujamaa is a Swahili term meaning "familyhood." It refers to a social and economic philosophy developed by Julius Nyerere, the first president of Tanzania, in the 1960s. Ujamaa emphasizes collective agricultural production and communal living to promote self-reliance and economic independence. The idea was to bring people together to work and share resources, helping to eradicate poverty and improve living standards. Nyerere believed that through cooperation and unity, communities could effectively manage their affairs and build a better future, reflecting the values of solidarity and mutual support in Tanzanian culture.
