TSE (Transmissible Spongiform Encephalopathy)

Transmissible Spongiform Encephalopathy (TSE) refers to a group of rare, progressive neurodegenerative diseases that affect the brain, leading to sponge-like changes in brain tissue. TSEs are caused by misfolded proteins called prions, which can induce other normal proteins to misfold as well. Common forms include Bovine Spongiform Encephalopathy (mad cow disease) in cattle and Creutzfeldt-Jakob disease in humans. These diseases result in severe neurological symptoms, with no cure currently available. They can be transmitted through infected tissues, particularly in medical procedures or consumption of contaminated meat.
