TSEs in deer (Chronic Wasting Disease)
Transmissible Spongiform Encephalopathies (TSEs), like Chronic Wasting Disease (CWD), are progressive brain disorders affecting deer and related animals. Caused by abnormal prions—misfolded proteins—they lead to brain damage, weight loss, behavioral changes, and ultimately death. TSEs are contagious, spreading through bodily fluids, contaminated environments, or direct contact. There are no effective treatments or vaccines, and the disease poses ecological and economic concerns. Researchers continue to study CWD to better understand its transmission, impact, and ways to manage or prevent its spread in wild and captive deer populations.
