Trusteeship Council
The Trusteeship Council is one of the main organs of the United Nations, established to oversee the administration of trust territories—regions placed under the protection of another country, typically after World War II. Its purpose was to ensure that the interests of the local populations were respected and that they could work towards self-governance or independence. Although it played a significant role during the decolonization period, the Council has largely suspended its operations since the last trust territory, Palau, became independent in 1994. Today, it meets as needed.
