Tribune of the Plebs
The Tribune of the Plebs was an important political office in ancient Rome, established around 494 BCE. It represented the interests of the plebeians, the common people, against the ruling patricians. Tribunes had the power to propose legislation, summon the Senate, and most importantly, veto decisions that could harm the plebeians. They were seen as protectors of the lower class and could not be harmed while in office. This role was crucial in balancing power in Roman society, allowing plebeians to have a voice and participate in governance. Over time, tribunes gained significant influence in Roman politics.
