Treaty of Portsmouth

The Treaty of Portsmouth, signed in 1905, ended the Russo-Japanese War between Russia and Japan. Negotiated in Portsmouth, New Hampshire, the treaty resulted in Japan gaining control of Korea and parts of Manchuria, strengthening Japan’s influence in East Asia. It also limited Russia’s involvement in the region. As a result, Japan emerged as a major world power. The treaty was brokered by U.S. President Theodore Roosevelt, who won the Nobel Peace Prize for his efforts. Overall, it marked a significant shift in regional power dynamics and helped bring peace after years of conflict.
