Tolstoy Farm

Tolstoy Farm was a community established in South Africa in the early 20th century by Mahatma Gandhi’s followers, inspired by his principles of nonviolent resistance and simple living. Named after the Russian writer Leo Tolstoy, it served as a cooperative settlement where people lived collectively, shared resources, and practiced nonviolent protest against injustice. The farm aimed to demonstrate sustainable living and social equality, becoming a symbol of grassroots activism. Over time, it played a significant role in South Africa’s struggle for rights and helped promote ideas of community, self-sufficiency, and nonviolent resistance.
