Thoracentesis
Thoracentesis is a medical procedure used to remove excess fluid from the space between the lungs and the chest wall, known as the pleural space. Doctors typically perform this procedure to relieve breathing difficulties caused by fluid buildup, often due to conditions like pneumonia or heart failure. During thoracentesis, a needle is carefully inserted through the skin and into the pleural space to withdraw fluid. The procedure usually takes place in a hospital setting and can help doctors diagnose the underlying cause of the fluid accumulation as well as provide symptom relief.
