
Thomas Jefferson (historical figure)
Thomas Jefferson (1743-1826) was an American Founding Father, the principal author of the Declaration of Independence, and the third President of the United States. A proponent of democracy and individual rights, he believed in the principles of liberty and self-governance. Jefferson was also a diplomat, serving as the first Secretary of State. He pursued the Louisiana Purchase, which doubled the size of the U.S., and promoted religious freedom and public education. As a member of the Enlightenment, his ideas greatly influenced American democracy and the development of the nation.
