The Rimland Theory

The Rimland Theory, proposed by geostrategist Nicholas Spykman in the mid-20th century, suggests that the coastal fringes of Eurasia—the "Rimland"—are key to global power. Unlike land-based powers, Spykman argued that control of these coastal areas, which include parts of Europe, the Middle East, and Asia, is crucial for influencing world affairs. He believed that nations controlling the Rimland could dominate the entire world due to its strategic resources and connectivity. This theory highlights the importance of maritime access and alliances in shaping geopolitical dynamics.
