The Polish Constitution of May 3, 1791

The Polish Constitution of May 3, 1791, was a groundbreaking document that established a constitutional monarchy in Poland, aiming to modernize the country's governance. It sought to strengthen the central government, limit the powers of the nobility, and promote civil liberties and equality among citizens. Influenced by Enlightenment ideas, it also included provisions for the separation of powers and social reforms. Although it was in effect for only a short time before being abolished, the Constitution is celebrated as one of the first modern constitutions in Europe and an important step towards democracy in Poland.
