The Maroons
The Maroons are descendants of enslaved Africans who escaped from plantations in Jamaica during the 17th to 19th centuries. They established independent communities in rugged, remote areas of the island, resisting colonizers and maintaining a distinct culture rooted in African traditions. Over time, the Maroons negotiated treaties with colonial authorities, securing formal recognition of their independence. Today, they are celebrated for their resilience, cultural heritage, and contributions to Jamaican history, often seen as symbols of resistance and self-determination.
